8m tall Matilda
More than a thousand guests moved from the opening performance at the Regent Plaza Theatre to the Melbourne Town Hall for this spectacular cocktail party. Melbourne’s Town Hall was the perfect backdrop for this VIP celebration for Matilda the Musical. The grand space with warm wooden floorboards as well as intricate wood panelling details, set the tone beautifully for an old school classroom where Matilda might have set books flying.
Working with Event Emporium, Empire Red represented the uncanny magic and rambunctious fun of Matilda the musical through feature design elements.
Firstly, the hero piece in the room, an 8 metre tall Matilda stood proudly on the main stage. She was complete with letters ‘floating’ around her. Backlit and a wash of blue light, haze was also used to capture the lighting effects. These elements beautifully replicated the hero images of the promotional material surrounding the show.
Set in the centre of the hall was a custom built bar and stage. Due to this central layout, the space was transformed in to an immersive and highly entertaining evening. This is usually a challenge for such a large group in a vast space. The central stage provided a platform for the evenings entertainment. On show were both a DJ and live performers throughout the night. Suspended above the bar was a striking, 3 tiered “book-a-lier” which was the focal point for the centre of the room. With book stacks and oversized vintage style globes, this “book-a-lier” was a intricate piece to construct onsite, but well worth the trouble.
Finally, Illuminated cocktail tables were monogrammed with Matilda’s signature M and where paired with clear bar stools. Not a detail was missed. This opening night celebration was a lot of fun and is another project we enjoyed immensely.
